{Not a brood. Not a brace. Not a chattering. Not a flush. No, this is a charm. A charm of finches.}
ob•ses•sion |əbˈse sh ən|
noun
the state of being obsessed with someone or something : she cut around their tiny claws and beating wings with a devotion bordering on obsession.
• an idea or thought that continually preoccupies or intrudes on a person's mind : she was in the grip of an obsession she was powerless to resist as she tied a series of knots one after the other.
There is little about the work Louise and I do that is not linked closely to obsession. It is perhaps, as recently I mused, what steers the ship Louise and I jointly captain across the paper seas. We are linked by a love of paper, be it to draw or paint upon, to fold into concertina form, or to snip at with a pair of scissors until the negative space (typically) is no more and new landscape must be found. Or, in the case of Hidden Gems and Rough Diamonds, a double-sided zebra finch appears. One hundred of them, each taking the better part of 10 minutes to cut. Yes, it is obsession I speak of here. What perhaps once was devotion is now more akin to obsession, I am certain, and perhaps we are not the captains we think we are, but loyal subjects to the medium Paper.
As Mozart's Requiem still about the head swirls, here, for you today, a look at the window at Milly Sleeping featuring our 100-strong charm all suspended from golden threads.
Thanks, Leah, for your surgeon-like precision with those little top knots and your ingenious hanging system, for your patience with our mania when it comes to our work, and for inviting us to be a part of LookStopShop. Making works especially for both beautiful spaces was something great to sink the teeth into and has provided us with a certain winter bounce in step.
