With several books on the go at any one time, I have books I like to read on the tram (suitable for interrupted spells and often in contrast to actual location) and books I like to read at night before I fall to sleep. Some books lend themselves to a late morning lie in and others to curled up on the couch, head craning forward, glasses gradually sliding off nose. Some are best savoured as tiny morsel, all the better for mulling over ideas tossed in the air. Some are so heavy that they have to rest in the lap or prop against a large pillow serving as a soft altar.
Other books I read in bed, resting the book on my stomach in classic pose of the reader, and I like that when I close the book the characters remain locked in place, frozen until next sort out. I can leave them suspended thusly, waiting, and this feeling of controlling a fragment of time is agreeable.
Falling asleep, head buried in a book, the notion of reading a book in bed is one few of us can resist.
