Pasta fazoula, Tallulah

Have a banana, Hannah
Try the salami, Tommy
Give with the gravy, Davy…

And the “Chile con carne for Barney”, Cab Calloway’s Everybody Eats When They Come To My House seemed like the right thing to listen to when working on these four, food heavy collages.

Pass me a pancake, Mandrake…
Eat the tables, the chairs, the napkins, who cares?

(Can’t recall the song? Why here’s a teeny, tiny taste: Cab CallowayEverybody Eats When They Come to My House )

A long while in the coming, here is a small sample of new, decidedly food related, collages that may end up in a zine all about eating. A zine you ought be sure to bring your appetite for. A zine to be made by Shari, Louise and I, and due for completion… well, sometime soon, should nimble toes and fingers be crossed.

The frying pan still needs a scour, and the skillet needs a-licking, but other than that our zine is slowly, slowly edging ever closer to completion. The chef will be taking them zine orders soon. In order to get things moving just a smidgen, new collages with titles from songs, you guessed it, all about food.

Lets_eat2
{Purple Stew.}

(Some of the assembled pieces include... from Detroit Publishing Company postcards, A Chinese Vegetable Pedlar in San Francisco, food stuffs from Egypt, purple Ting ware of the Sung dynasty caldron engraved with cicada designs, and a large pestle shown without its mortar.)

Lets_eat3
{I Heard The Voice Of A Pork Chop.}

(Also from the Detroit Publishing Company postcards (11000 Series, published 1907-1908), Drying Peaches at Isleta, New Mexico... whilst hearing the melodic sounds of a pork chop one can only presume.)

Lets_eat4
{Swing And Dine.}

(Vegetable Men, Havana, Cuba, (thank you, Detroit Publishing Company postcards, once again) alongside imagery from the Powamû festival celebrating the glorious distribution of bean sprouts.)

Lets_eat_1
{I Like Pie, I Like Cake.}

(A Fruit and Poultry Vendor, Havana, Cuba, meets with all things yellow... Chêng Tê ware of the Ming dynasty (a small libation cup, without decoration) and Hung Chih ware of the Ming dynasty (a wine vessel decorated with coiled dragons).

Please… now set the table, Shari, and bring the ladle, LJ, we’re well on the way to a feast.

A few flickr favourites for the taste buds before I go. Bon Appétit, my little ones.
~ Mav’s dear green tomato
~ Camilla’s fika
~ Anniebee’s cookies
~ Lisa S’s tea
~ Lottie’s pêche
~ Paula’s *day 16
… plus one more from Hanne:: before I go.

Keep enjoying that weekend. And don't forget to swing by both Shari and Louise's blogs to see a little more of what's simmering on the stove and cooling on the ledge. More, more, more food delights to sample before the day is done.

Love this new collages, g. You've dished out some beautiful collages for our zine. So exciting to know that the three of us are one step closer to it being an actual printed zine.

Thanks for the sneak peek. I am so excited about this three way zine!

Really love these collages, the colours on the sepia backgrounds are beautiful. Looking forward to the zine and enjoying lovely food flickr links.

These are cool collages. Darn, I had to put on my reading glasses to see the details - they are wonderful. What a neat idea to do a collaborative food zine.
The Cab Calloway song is great.

I have already told Shari how great I find this project. and I love the amusing way you describe it not to mention your collages.
looking forward to see the whole zine together.
... with all that food you made me hungry. I better go and get something to eat. maybe some biscuits and milk before I sleep. after all it is 37 minutes past midnight ... good night!

I looooooooooooooooove the idea of food-related collages. I love food. My current art collection has a bit of a fashion theme to it...I'm thinking maybe i need to also start a food theme. Hmmmm...

i am so so excited about this zine!! the food collages are fantastic. luckily i am eating as i write because otherwise the hunger would be unbearable :) such a good collaboration all around!

Hey there LJ & Shari,
I'm so looking forward to making this food zine of ours. I can't wait to amble around to Officeworks, to stand underneath the harsh fluorescent lighting and print this zine. A photocopied zine by the three of us full of recipes, drawings, haiku, collages and whatever else we care to throw into the pot. To say I'm excited is a huge understatement.

Thanks for all your interest Marsha, Veronica TM, Meg, Julie, Lisa S, Andrea, Tiel, Mum, Sophie Bond, Crust Station, Kate, Paula, Risa and Amisha. It's super to know that you are all as seemingly keen as I for this zine to become an actual thing... a real zine folded in half and perhaps stapled at the middle.

Louise, Shari and I will keep you all posted on the progression of this three-way zine of ours. A food themed play list seems bound to appear... Jambalaya (on the Bayou), Saturday Night Fish Fry, and Whiskey Heaven (oh, wait, that's technically not a food)... there's just so many great songs dedicated to chewing and eating and consuming.

So, expect more sneak peeks before this zine is done, and thanks for those ripe mangoes, Julie. And as Paula mentioned, with all that talk about food, “I better go and get something to eat".
take care,
g xoxo

still
catching up
and
excited
about
getting
my paws
on the
food zine-
the 3 of you...
i may even
get so inspired
i'll cook!
