Modifications in Pictorial Education

As I type, Gracia is collaging the final elements upon our new collaborative works entitled Modifications in Pictorial Education (i and ii). Here is a look at the cover of one of them. Can you see my Slaty-capped shrike-vireo (Vireolanius leucotis)? Follow the eyes of the Unadorned female rock wallaby and you will find him.

Companions

This is a Pheasant-tailed Jacana (Hydrophasianus chirurgus) and a Lesser bird-of-paradise (Paradisaea minor). What do they have in common I hear you ask? Well they both appear in my zine Birds that like to display. The title of which says it all.

A Striated Grasswren

This is a drawing of mine of a Striated Grasswren (Amytornis striatus), which appears in my Humble birds zine. For some time I have been thinking I should make a zine of Australian birds, perhaps even a little box set! Do you have a favourite Australian bird? I am open to suggestions.

A Streaky-breasted Spiderhunter

This is a Streaky-breasted Spiderhunter (Arachnothera affinis). Spiderhunters are often described as drab members of the sunbird family. I think drab is a bit harsh, but I guess they are competing with sunbirds like this.

In addition to its IMPACT7 roots, this zine was made as Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet played. It, too, inspired the balance you see our characters attempting to hold. Having been fortunate enough to see Graeme Murphy's Romeo & Juliet performed twice in the month of September by The Australian Ballet,  it is little wonder its inspiration carried over.

Gracia and I have been acquiring quite the collection of tote bags lately. This one, Read Don't Twitter, is from Sarah Bodman who is currently in Australia with Paul Laidler for the Impact7 Printmaking Conference in Melbourne and Codex Event 8 in Brisbane. They are visiting all the way from the Centre for Fine Print Research, UWE Bristol UK. For the past several years, Gracia and I have chatted to Sarah via email, so getting the chance to meet in person the other day was like meeting a penfriend or a blogging pal. It was wonderful and things ended up as lovely as I had hoped.

And this one is made by the very talented Fanja of Le Train fantôme.





To this collection I can now add one from my parents who returned this morning from a holiday to the UK and France.

Impact7 mini zine fair

This Friday past was spent behind a table at MUMA; a table full of Gracia and my zines, as part of the IMPACT7 zine fair co-ordinated by Anna Poletti. It was a very busy day and a slew of our zines found new homes. Throughout the day, we met many lovely people, some we knew already and many we did not. Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you, lovely people, for being so supportive of our work.
